Jakarta is not well served with public space. Its museums, parks, and libraries are rare and most are not well maintained. By contrast, Jakarta’s shopping malls are most lively and well-attended collective spaces. Though by definition not public spaces, shopping malls have become the default ‘public’ spaces of the city. In general, Jakarta malls are well-maintained, air conditioned, comfortable, safe and strategically located in the city. The Social Mall HI-BRIDge project proposes to embrace missing public facilities between a cluster malls in the centre of Jakarta through a series of flyover pedestrian bridges. The project optimizes the traffic at the street level and between the different malls. The program includes: library, playground, clinics and green spaces, depending on the specific needs of the neighbourhood next to the mall. The next future malls can be bright and social while giving to the city the long-awaited public facilities that it misses: playgrounds, libraries, art galleries, clinics, sport fields, etc.
