The original concept design for the new Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Berlin was worked out in 3 options. A maritime related theme taking cues from bowsprits of sailboats interpreting the form into an external load bearing façade structure was chosen to be developed. The façade further plays with layering and transparencies integrating external retractable sun shading louvers. Additionally, a gradually transforming batik pattern from all over Indonesia as glass fritting to reduce solar heat gains in summer and enhance privacy was developed. The interior functions are laid out around a central inner courtyard which accommodates the vertical circulation but also serves as meeting point, exhibition, and event space for the embassy.
